First Sprint Triathlon

First Sprint Triathlon

My first Sprint Triathlon

I’ve been a member of a local running and triathlon club for a few years now. I have always dabbled in the three elements of a Triathlon, swimming, cycling and running. However I’ve never had the courage to put them all together and see if I could actually complete a Triathlon.

Challenges

I’ve entered many events and completed challenges I never thought I’d ever do this year. These include Riding 75 and 100 miles, walking a Marathon and now my first Sprint Triathlon. Previously I’ve always said “no, not for me” when others have asked when I’d be doing one. This year however, I have had the attitude of ‘just give it ago, what’s the worst can happen’…so I have.

The Triathlon

On July 21st, 2024 at 7:30am I took part in my first Triathlon at Dorney Lake, Eton. Our clubs junior section were attending Dorney Lake to compete in a family triathlon, which I was going along to support. Seeing as I was going to be there I decided this was my opportunity to give the triathlon a go. The venue was a flat course for the bike and run and the lake was clear and warm for the swim…Perfect for me!

Swim, Bike, Run

I won’t lie, my nerves did try to get the better off me at times, but I kept my cool as I wanted to enjoy the experience.

The swim course was 750m with a mass start, which went better than I had expected. Out from the swim I had to find my bike, get out of my wet suit and pop my cycling shoes, helmet on. I then completed the 19.6km route…why is there always a head wind?

Once back in from the bike, it was a quick change to trainers and out for the 5k run.

It was such a fantastic feeling coming across the finish line! Realising what I had achieved and having fellow club members there to cheer and congratulate me was a very touching and emotional moment.

In total the race took me 1hr 38mins to complete. Not bad for my first Triathlon and a bench mark to improve.

I can now honestly say I ‘LOVED IT!’
