New School Science Block

As part of the new science block project, the school required us to remove the old wooden science block. It was well passed its best. The vision was a modern, new school science facility.

The existing building was a 1970s wooden framed and clad structure that had deteriorated over the last 5o years. The school wanted to replace the original building with fit for purpose, bespoke science building. A design team was appointed to create the vision of a new purpose built science lab. The project was submitted to planning and then put out as a open tender opportunity with Waller Building and Glazing being the successful contractor.

Original Building Removal

The first aspect of the new building was to demolish and remove the original 1970s building. Before we started the demolition of the wooded structure, a refurbishment and development survey was carried out. Asbestos was discovered in the original services ducts beneath the building. This had to be removed safely as soon as the building was knocked down. We appointed a registered asbestos removal company to take away and dispose the asbestos containing underground service ducts.

The New Building

The new construction was a traditional build with a strip foundation and a reinforced concrete floor slab. Externally, the building was rendered blockwork with cladding in areas and a tiled roof finish.

Internally, the design of the science block included three science laboratories, a theory classroom and an inventory space. In addition, an entrance lobby, plantroom and a store cupboard were also created.

The specification requirements included the installation of mechanical ventilation, under floor heating, aluminum doors and uPVC double glazed windows throughout. The door and window installation was carried out by our glazing division. This meant that we could keep the cost down as well as continuity throughout the project. Additionally, all gas and electrical works were carried out in accordance with current regulations.

The Final Touches

We worked closely with the school, selecting the science lab layouts, flooring and colour schemes. We procured, assembled and installed all of the lab furniture as well as the fixtures and fittings to the school leadership team’s preference.

The final part of the project was landscaping around the new building. This included new pathways, grassed areas and fencing.

The Hand Over

We handed over the building to the school at the end of the project which was completed on time. The school now has a modern and fully compling building which also meets all current energy efficiency standards. The science team were delighted with the new building and couldn’t believe what an improvement the bespoke facility was in comparison to the original building.

This new building can now be enjoyed by the students and staff for many years to come.
